Your sketch can be simple. The goal is to clearly show the room shape, wall lengths, openings, sink, and appliances.

Use Inches
Record all measurements in inches.
Sketch First
Draw the basic shape of your kitchen before measuring.
Take Photos
Photos help confirm windows, doors, appliances, and obstacles.

Draw the basic shape of your kitchen. Straight lines are fine. Label each wall so your measurements are easy to follow.

Add windows, doors, walkways, and pass-throughs to your sketch. Mark where each opening starts and ends.
Note: Measure openings from the outside edge of the trim.

Measure the full length of each wall from corner to corner. Write the measurement directly on your sketch.
Note: Start in one corner and work around the room.

Mark the location of your sink, range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, or hood. If you know the appliance size, write it down.

Note anything that may affect cabinet placement, such as vents, outlets, switches, pipes, soffits, radiators, or access panels.
